About the artist
Brenda Roman (b. 1993) is a fine artist residing near the city of Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art in 2017 from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she concentrated in oil painting.
Brenda discovered her artistic skills in junior high when she began drawing charcoal portraits of her favorite musicians. Working in charcoal evolved into exploring the medium of painting, which allowed for a better outlet for the artistic visions of her work. After high school, she went on to pursue her interest in painting and the arts at UIC to expand her skills and knowledge of her practice. It was during her undergraduate career that her craft of painting grew and focused her thesis work on using the portrait and the body to create narratives that helped to express her struggle with anxiety and depression.
Since graduating art school, Brenda has been working to further develop her practice while continuing to explore the portrait and the body through painting and other media.
ABOUT THE WORK
In this collection of paintings, the artist uses the portrait and the body to explore various themes through the use of color, texture, lighting, and props.
Each painting starts out as a photograph, set up and taken by the artist for reference. The artist then edits the photograph through basic Photoshop to help bring forth the vision for the painting. The work is then translated to its final form through the painting process.
Though the artist aims for a realistic quality in each painting, it is made sure that there remains room for exploration through the use of the medium.
